Subject Lessons
education is lighting a fire of the imagination, not filling a pail of knowledge

In addition to the themed Main Lessons that the classes will receive each morning, there are a range of subject lessons where pupils receive school study support. These are;

Numeracy
Numeracy lessons seek to set the foundational knowledge of Maths, measuring, counting and place value. Students learn through practical experience and experiments and come to gain a strong foundation of maths skills and knowledge to support them in their further learning.

Literacy
At beehub, Literacy lessons are fun and creative, and build on the children's interest in the world. Poetry, drama, story-telling, rhetoric and conversation are cultivated hand in hand with literacy.
Waldorf education aims for children to enjoy writing and reading and be motivated to do it, so they can express themselves, develop literacy skills and access the imaginative worlds and information this makes possible.
Right from the start children are encouraged to use the literacy skills they are acquiring in simple reading and writing tasks so that proficiency can develop. Waldorf children tend to become avid readers with extensive interests and enthusiastic writers, capable of a wide range of writing styles, from narrative, poetry, formal and informal writing, scientific writing and ultimately, critical and academic writing.

Art & Craft
Arts and Crafts are central to a Waldorf curriculum and permeate everything we do.
Art is a mode of expression and communication (including illustration). Once children have learned the qualities of the media and techniques, they have opportunities to practice these freely. Art is used in the main lesson with many opportunities for children to communicate their learning through their artistic expression, but also in designated art lessons, where children can learn and refine these skills.
Art at beehub will include
-
Form drawing (also called dynamic drawing), makes movement visible on paper and requires focus, control and patient practice as children work through increasingly complex forms.
-
Drawing, beginning with wax stick and block crayons and thick, wooden, coloured pencils; and moving to sketching pencils, chalk, charcoal sticks and pencils, graphite pencils, and conte sticks.
-
Modelling using clay, wax, wax and kaolinite based modelling materials; then papier-mâché, plaster and ceramics.
-
For older children/ teens simple printing techniques (potato-cut, lino-cut) are introduced alongside simple photography techniques.
Craft for children and teens has a multitude of benefits. They have the opportunity to develop dexterity, physical fluency, automaticity and stamina in a chosen craft or art form. On the completion of their project, the children have a sense of satisfaction, achievement and pride in the creation of something useful, beautiful or thought provoking.
Crafts at beehub may take the form of an extended project that is worked on each week. Or they may be smaller seasonal pieces that can be taken home to be enjoyed that day.
Students will learn new handwork skills and techniques in each successive year, building on the skills previously learned. The new skills usually involve increasing complexity and might include crocheting, hand sewing, precise stitching such as cross stitch, machine sewing, simple hand weaving and fabric dyeing.

Science
At beehub we aim to provide learners with a hands-on experimental approach to science. If we can do an experiment about a topic, then we will do an experiment to understand the scientific world. The students will learn about natural phenomena and gain a practical experience of scientific ideas, famous scientists through history and key experiments. The topics being taught in the science lessons will be in-line with the Main Lesson topics that students will be learning in their morning lessons.

Music
Music is an incredibly important part of the curriculum and the developing child. While songs and music will be part of the daily experience for students, there will be a focus in Music lessons each week to develop the musical skill of each individual child, as well as how music sounds as a group ensemble. For the Bumblebee group music lessons will focus around using recorders and simple songs. For the Honeybee group Music lessons will involve the use of xylophones, drums and other percussive instruments as students work on complex polyrhythms and further develop their musical skills and abilities. At beehub music is more about participation rather than performance and each child is supported irrespective of their ability
