Carder Bees

Ages 10-14 years old

Opening in September 2026, the Carder Bees is a class for teens and tweens. Something remarkable happens between the ages of ten and fourteen. The child who once lived easily inside a world of imagination and fairy tale begins to wake up — not just to themselves, but to the world around them. This is a gradual, often tender unfolding. Young people at this age are developing a new capacity for logic and critical thinking, a deepening sense of justice, and a growing curiosity about how things actually work - in nature, in history, and in human society. They ask harder questions. They notice contradiction. They want to understand, not just to know.

Waldorf education meets this development with lessons that speak directly to it. Rather than rushing ahead to abstract concepts, we follow the child's own development and inner journey - offering content that is vivid, concrete, and morally alive. Rather than focusing on exam outcomes, we choose to focus on developing a sense of self and the world around us.

What the Carder Bees explore

Norse History and Mythology - The stories and history of the Norse people, their beliefs, their voyages and their way of life. Rich storytelling combined with real historical inquiry, developing both imagination and critical thinking.

Perspective Drawing — Training the eye and hand through careful observation and artistic technique. Students learn to see and represent the world around them with growing precision and confidence.

Geology - Exploring the rocks, minerals and forces that have shaped our landscape. A subject that begins beneath our feet and opens up into deep time and the story of the earth itself.

Romans - The rise and reach of Rome, its engineering, its laws and its legacy. A historical block that introduces questions of power, organisation and what holds a society together.

History of Language and Writing - Tracing the human journey from the earliest marks on clay through to the written word. A short block that helps students appreciate the remarkable skill they are developing every time they put pen to paper.

Class Play - A theatrical production developed and performed by the class. This draws on courage, cooperation and creativity, and is always one of the most memorable experiences of the year.

European Geography - Mapping the landscapes, climates and cultures of our continent. Students develop a sense of the wider world and their place within it.

Astronomy - Lifting the gaze from the earth to the sky. Observation, wonder and careful study come together as students explore the movements of the stars and planets.

Food and Plant Science - The living world of plants, nutrition and agriculture. A hands-on, seasonal subject that connects the classroom to the garden and the kitchen.

Biographical Studies - Students research and present the lives of inspiring figures from across history and the world. This block develops independence, research skills and a sense of what is possible in a human life.

Building skills for life

Alongside the main lesson content, there is a thread that runs through the whole programme: helping students develop confidence in their own writing, learn how to research and find things out for themselves, and take real pride in the quality of their work. In a world increasingly shaped by screens and shortcuts, these are skills that matter — and they are best developed through subjects that feel genuinely worth writing about.

Maths and English are taught as dedicated subject lessons alongside the main lesson programme, and specialist craft teachers lead weekly sessions in practical and artistic skills.

Beyond the Main Lessons

Every day starts with movement, stretches, music and mental maths practice - not because it's required, but because these activities help the students to arrive into the classroom space and become mentally and physically prepared for each days lessons.

Students get regular study support for English and Maths, helping them stay on track with core academic skills while pursuing these richer topics. We work with parents to support each child's home-education journey.

The creative work - handcraft projects, art exploration, linocut printing. These projects give students a chance to make something beautiful with their hands. In our screen-dominated world, there's something deeply satisfying about creating physical objects, and feeling proud of the outcome.

Why Choose Carder Bees?

With no more than 18 students in the class, everyone gets proper attention. More importantly, this size creates real community - students know each other well and learn to support each other's growth. It's big enough for good discussions and small enough that nobody gets lost.

The learning reaches far beyond classroom walls. We visit London for the Science Museum, Natural History Museum & to enjoy plays, we explore nature, bring in guest speakers, and connect what we're studying to the real world around us. Beehub focuses on hands-on learning for home-educating families.

Time in the Carder Bees class prepares students beautifully for the challenge of the GCSEs while developing the critical thinking and communication skills they'll need whatever path they choose.

Most importantly, our classroom community provides a safe space for young people to explore big ideas, make mistakes, and discover their strengths. The teenage years can be turbulent, but we aim to make them exciting rather than just challenging.
